Golf Vacations and Packages in New Zealand
New Zealand has more golf courses per person than any other country in the world – almost 400! March-May, the New Zealand fall, are the optimum months for golfing, with the New Zealand spring/summer (September-February) a second choice. The New Zealand winter months, June-August, will be cool. Remember that airlines are busier and prices somewhat higher in December, during the New Zealand summer and the U.S. winter.
Beautiful landscapes and low population combine to make some of the best (least expensive) golfing opportunities to be found. Blend great golf with great scenery and you have a beautiful trip. Cameras should be required on most golf courses!
newzealandtourist.com has reviewed New Zealand golf websites, and can recommend the following:
- NZ Golf.net — For course descriptions, maps, and pictures. Remember that green fees, when quoted, are ordinarily in $NZ, which are about 1/2 the U.S. dollar value.
- Professional Golfers Association of New Zealand (Inc.) — Here you will find a roster of New Zealand PGA members and an event calendar.
One critical opinion is that two of the best courses in New Zealand are Paraparumu Beach, north of Wellington, and Wairakei International, near Lake Taupo in the middle of the North Island. Paraparumu Beach offers length, tight fairways, and shots that are challenged by winds off the Tasman Sea. Its 17th hole is rated one of the best in the world. Wairakei International boasts the country’s longest hole at 615 yards. It was also named one of the top 25 golf courses outside the United States, by the Golf Digest.
See the Golf Club Atlas for a detailed description and comparison of these two courses.
The avid golfer might ask us to arrange a North Island tour including both of these first-rate courses, plus others.
On the South Island, we recommend Bruce and Averill Head, born and bred South Islanders, who know all the nooks and crannies and will take you off the beaten tourist track where you will see pristine lakes, rivers, and the jagged Southern Alps in the background…awesome! They offer individually planned golf trips plus small group travel from Christchurch for 7 and 10 day golf packages.
Remember, golf clubs must be listed on the New Zealand Agriculture and Customs Declaration on entering the country.
